Description

Origin:

The Beagle originated in England, where it was developed as a scent hound for hunting rabbits and other small game. Their incredible sense of smell, endurance, and friendly personality made them excellent hunting companions. Today, Beagles are beloved family pets and are also commonly used as detection dogs due to their exceptional noses.

Size:

Height: 13–15 inches
Weight: 20–30 pounds

Appearance:

Beagles are compact, sturdy dogs with a short, dense coat, long floppy ears, and warm, expressive brown or hazel eyes. They have a strong, athletic build and a tail that is often carried high with a white tip. Their coat is most commonly tricolor (black, white, and tan), but they also come in lemon and white, red and white, chocolate tricolor, blue tick, and several other hound color combinations.

Temperament:

  • Friendly and affectionate
  • Curious and intelligent
  • Happy and outgoing

Beagles are known for their cheerful personalities and love of people. They are social dogs that enjoy being part of family activities and generally get along well with children and other pets. Their curious nature and powerful sense of smell often lead them on exciting adventures, making secure fencing and leash walks important.

Exercise Needs:

Beagles are energetic dogs that need daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. They enjoy walks, games of fetch, scent work, hiking, and interactive play. Because they are scent hounds, they love exploring new smells and should always be supervised or kept on a leash in unsecured areas.

Grooming:

Their short, weather-resistant coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing to remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. Beagles do shed throughout the year, with heavier shedding during seasonal changes. Regular ear cleaning is especially important because their long ears can trap moisture and debris. Routine nail trimming, dental care, and occasional baths will help keep them in excellent condition.

Health:

Common health concerns may include hip dysplasia, ear infections, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, obesity, and certain eye conditions. Providing regular veterinary care, proper nutrition, and daily exercise can help support a long, healthy life.

Good With Kids & Other Pets?

Yes! Beagles are excellent family dogs and are well known for being gentle, playful, and patient with children. They typically get along very well with other dogs due to their pack-oriented nature and can also live peacefully with other household pets when properly introduced. Their loving, easygoing temperament makes them wonderful companions for families of all sizes.
