- Energetic and hardworking
Australian Shepherds are known for their strong bond with their families and their exceptional intelligence. They thrive when given a job to do and enjoy participating in activities such as obedience, agility, herding, and advanced training. Their alert and protective nature also makes them excellent watchdogs.
Exercise Needs:
This breed has high energy levels and requires plenty of daily exercise. Australian Shepherds enjoy long walks, hiking, running, fetch, agility courses, and interactive games. They also need regular mental stimulation to stay happy and prevent boredom-related behaviors.
Grooming:
Their thick double coat requires brushing several times a week to reduce shedding and prevent matting. During seasonal shedding periods, more frequent brushing may be necessary. Regular nail trimming, ear cleaning, dental care, and occasional baths help maintain their overall health and appearance.

Common health concerns may include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and certain hereditary eye conditions. Responsible breeding, routine veterinary care, proper nutrition, and regular exercise can help support a long and healthy life.
Good With Kids & Other Pets?
Yes! Australian Shepherds are generally excellent with children and can get along well with other pets when properly socialized. Their natural herding instincts may sometimes lead them to try to herd children or other animals. With proper training, socialization, and plenty of activity, they make wonderful family companions for active households.
