Description
Origin:
The Shorkie is a designer breed created by crossing a Shih Tzu with a Yorkshire Terrier. Originally bred to combine the affectionate personality of the Shih Tzu with the bold and energetic nature of the Yorkie, Shorkies quickly became popular as adorable companion dogs and family pets.
Size:
Height: 6–11 inches
Weight: 5–15 pounds
Appearance:
Shorkies are small dogs with soft, silky coats that may be straight, wavy, or slightly fluffy. Their coat colors can include black, tan, brown, gold, white, or mixed combinations. They often have expressive dark eyes, floppy or semi-erect ears, and a cute teddy bear-like appearance.
Temperament:
- Affectionate and loyal
- Playful and energetic
- Confident and alert
Shorkies are known for their loving personality and strong attachment to their owners. They enjoy attention and companionship and often act much bigger than they really are. Their lively and playful nature makes them entertaining and affectionate family companions.
Exercise Needs:
This breed has moderate energy levels and enjoys daily walks, indoor playtime, and interactive activities. Shorkies are adaptable to apartment living but still benefit from regular exercise and mental stimulation.
Grooming:
Their coat requires regular brushing several times a week to prevent tangles and matting. Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is commonly recommended. Routine dental care, ear cleaning, nail trimming, and eye care are also important for this breed.
Health:
Common health concerns may include dental disease, luxating patella, hypoglycemia, allergies, and tracheal collapse. Because of their small size, regular veterinary care and careful handling are important.
Good With Kids & Other Pets?
Yes! Shorkies can do well with children and other pets when properly socialized. Because they are tiny dogs, supervision around very young children is recommended. Their affectionate and playful personality makes them excellent companions for families, singles, and seniors alike.
