Description

Origin:

The Chihuahua originated in Mexico and is considered the smallest dog breed in the world. The breed is believed to descend from the ancient Techichi, a companion dog kept by the Toltec civilization and later associated with the Aztecs. Chihuahuas became popular in the United States in the late 1800s and are now cherished for their bold personality and loyal companionship.

Size:

Height: 5–8 inches

Weight: 2–6 pounds

Appearance:

Chihuahuas are tiny yet well-balanced dogs with alert expressions, large upright ears, and prominent, expressive eyes. They come in both smooth-coat (short-haired) and long-coat varieties and can be found in nearly every color and pattern, including fawn, black, white, chocolate, cream, blue, and merle.

Temperament:

  • Loyal and devoted
  • Alert and confident
  • Intelligent and spirited

Despite their small size, Chihuahuas have a big personality. They are affectionate with their families and often form a strong bond with one favorite person. They are naturally alert, making them excellent watchdogs, and thrive on attention and companionship.

Exercise Needs:

Chihuahuas have low to moderate exercise needs. Daily walks and indoor play sessions are usually enough to keep them healthy and happy. Because of their small size, they can get much of their exercise indoors but still benefit from regular mental stimulation and socialization.

Grooming:

Smooth-coated Chihuahuas require minimal grooming, while long-coated Chihuahuas benefit from brushing two to three times a week to prevent tangles. Both varieties should receive regular nail trims, dental care, ear cleaning, and occasional baths to maintain good health.

Health:

Common health concerns may include dental disease, patellar luxation (loose kneecaps), heart disease, tracheal collapse, hypoglycemia (especially in puppies), and eye conditions. Routine veterinary care, a healthy diet, and responsible breeding practices help support a long, healthy life.

Good With Kids & Other Pets?

Yes—with proper socialization. Chihuahuas can get along well with respectful children and other pets, especially when raised together. Due to their very small size, they are best suited for homes with gentle, supervised children who understand how to safely handle small dogs. Their loyal, affectionate nature makes them wonderful companions for individuals, couples, seniors, and families alike.
