The Shih Tzu (pronounced “sheed-zoo”) is an ancient breed that dates back over a thousand years. Originally bred in China, they were prized companions of Chinese royalty — often seen lounging in palaces and being pampered by emperors.

Appearance:
Shih Tzus are famous for their luxurious, flowing coat, short snout, and big, round eyes. They have a sturdy little body and a plumed tail that curls over their back. Their coat comes in a wide variety of colors — gold, white, black, liver, and even combinations.

This breed’s coat requires regular grooming — daily brushing if kept long, or regular trims for easier care (the “puppy cut” is popular). Regular eye cleaning is also a must, as their big eyes can be sensitive.
Health:
Common issues include brachycephalic syndrome (due to their flat face), ear infections, and dental problems. Routine vet care, good dental hygiene, and avoiding heat are important.

Yes! Shih Tzus are known to be great with children and typically do well with other pets — especially when raised together. Their calm and playful nature makes them a joy in multi-pet homes.
