Description

Origin:

The Shiba Inu is one of Japan’s oldest and most treasured dog breeds. Originally bred for hunting small game and birds in the mountainous regions of Japan, the Shiba Inu is known for its agility, independence, and spirited personality. The breed has been designated a national treasure in Japan and remains one of the country’s most popular dogs.

Size:

Height: 13.5–16.5 inches
Weight: 17–23 pounds

Appearance:

Shiba Inus are compact, athletic dogs with a fox-like appearance. They have upright triangular ears, almond-shaped eyes, and a thick curled tail carried over their back. Their dense double coat comes in red, black and tan, cream, or sesame (red with black-tipped hairs). Their alert expression and confident stance make them instantly recognizable.

Temperament:

Confident and independent
Intelligent and alert
Loyal and spirited

Shiba Inus are known for their strong personalities and self-confidence. They are deeply loyal to their families but can be reserved with strangers. While affectionate, they often enjoy attention on their own terms and are known for being both clever and determined.

Exercise Needs:

This breed has moderate to high energy levels and requires daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. Walks, hiking, playtime, and mentally stimulating activities are excellent for Shiba Inus. Because they have a strong prey drive and can be escape artists, secure fencing and leash walks are highly recommended.

Grooming:

Their thick double coat requires brushing several times a week and more frequently during seasonal shedding periods. Shiba Inus are naturally clean dogs and often groom themselves similarly to cats. Routine nail trimming, dental care, and ear cleaning are also important.

Health:

Common health concerns may include allergies, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, glaucoma, cataracts, and other eye disorders. Regular veterinary checkups, proper nutrition, and maintaining a healthy weight help support a long and active life.

Good With Kids & Other Pets?

Yes! Shiba Inus can do well with children and other pets when properly socialized from an early age. However, their independent nature and strong prey instincts may require supervision around smaller animals. Their loyal, intelligent, and energetic personality makes them a great match for active and experienced dog owners.
